Our Story · New Haven, Connecticut

We grow fresh food, living knowledge, and community power.

Root Life is an Afro-Indigenous agricultural enterprise rooted in Greater New Haven — a farm, a school, a weekly harvest, and a wealth-building engine, run by people you can name.

We say it in three words: Eat the Sun.

Not a slogan about freshness. Photosynthesis is the only process on earth that turns light into food, and every plant our ancestors carried across an ocean was sunlight they had learned to store. We are in the business of shortening the distance between that light and a plate in New Haven.

The Mission

Fresh food you can trust, rooted in a history worth knowing, grown by people you can name.

We never market Black pain more powerfully than Black possibility. Our story is people growing, cooking, teaching, building businesses, raising families, and practicing abundance — a future worth joining, built one weekly harvest at a time.

Farmer D · Founder & Lead Grower

Know the grower. Know the harvest.

Farmer D has spent more than a decade growing food and growing people in Greater New Haven — over 2,000 young people have learned agriculture, food systems, and enterprise through his work. Every crop in the weekly harvest is grown under his hands and his standards, and every question about it gets an answer from the person whose hands were in the tray.

Praxis — practice informed by knowledge, knowledge sharpened by practice — is the working philosophy: the growing room is a classroom, the classroom is an enterprise, and the enterprise belongs, increasingly, to the people who work it.

Minutes from your table

Our controlled-environment growing room in New Haven harvests year-round — microgreens on living racks, mushrooms on our own blocks — while partner plots and community gardens across Greater New Haven carry the seasonal crops. Every space doubles as a classroom for the Youth Academy and adult cohorts.
