Farmer D is the founder of Root Life LLC, an Afro-Indigenous urban agriculture, food sovereignty, education and community wealth-building enterprise rooted in Greater New Haven, Connecticut. For more than a decade he has worked where soil, culture, health, education and economic self-determination meet.

Farmer D is the founder of Root Life LLC, an Afro-Indigenous urban agriculture, food sovereignty, education and community wealth-building enterprise rooted in Greater New Haven, Connecticut.

For more than a decade, Farmer D has worked where soil, culture, health, education and economic self-determination meet. His work goes beyond growing food. Through Root Life he is building an ecosystem where fresh food becomes an entry point into agricultural knowledge, youth employment, entrepreneurship, cultural memory, environmental stewardship and stronger neighbourhood economies.

Root Life grows microgreens, herbs, vegetables, mushrooms and other specialty crops while developing weekly harvest memberships, value-added foods, educational programs, community events and agricultural workforce pathways. Its guiding philosophy is simple: food should nourish people while strengthening the communities that produce it.

Farmer D has worked with thousands of young people and community members through urban farming, hands-on agricultural education, garden development, cooking, entrepreneurship, media and food-system organising. His approach treats the farm as more than a production site — it is a classroom, laboratory, gathering place, healing landscape and incubator for future farmers and community leaders.

He is also a media storyteller and documentarian whose work explores agriculture, culture, healing and community movements. That combination of farmer and storyteller shapes Root Life’s distinctive approach: every crop has biology, every seed has a history, every neighbourhood carries knowledge, and every harvest can tell a story.

Root Life is Farmer D’s vision for what an urban farm can become when agriculture is connected to culture, technology, education, art, entrepreneurship and community ownership.
